Description :This business plan relates to a surveillance device that can help the service providers maintain the fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) network. Specifically, we will develop a device that can effectively detect and localize the fiber fault in passive optical networks (PONs), which can lower down the providers’ OpEx and improve their efficiency. FTTH networks bring fiber to the homes so that the user can enjoy services such as video-on-demand service and video conference etc. PON is the technology that is being used to realize FTTH networks and is now being massively developed worldwide. According to FTTH council, the total number of FTTH subscribers has reached 74.72 million worldwide by the end of 2011, among which 72.67% users live in Asia. In China, FTTH has received strong support from Chinese government and the “three years rolling plan” of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology has announced a goal to build up 1,000 million optical network terminals (ONT) in south China in the twelfth “Five Year Plan”. The expected number of PON system will be 29,280,000. In such network, physical layer status must be monitored to ensure the network reliability and quality of service. However, the physical layer monitoring in PON is challenging and the cost for fault identification and troubleshooting is high due to lack of good monitoring technology. We began the research of PON monitoring technology 2 years ago and initiated an accurate and cost-effective surveillance technology. The principle has been verified in proof-of-concept experiment and the technology has been patented. In this project, we will develop a prototype of our invented monitoring device with network management software. The product is anticipated to be launched on Jan. 2014.
